Adele Myrlene Scott Adkins of Hondo died at Medina Community Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008. She was 89. She was born the second of three children, on June 24, 1919, in Iola, Grimes County, Texas, to William Camp and Inice Moon Scott. She graduated from Hondo High School in May 1937 and entered college at San Marcos. After a year, she returned to Hondo to teach a year at the one-room Elstone-Murphy School. She graduated with a degree in elementary education and a minor in music in 1941. She moved to Donna to teach for a year before returning to Hondo to work as a secretary in Base Operations, as the Hondo Air Base was being closed. During WWII, her family hosted many soldiers in their home on Taylor Lane. She also played piano at the second floor USO on Avenue M. She taught choir at Hondo High and elementary fifth grade until 1947. From 1947 to '51 she taught at Kingsville Jr. High in Kleberg; at Cuero until 1954; and at Kerrville from 1954 to 1958. She was married April 25, 1958, at First Baptist Church to Warren J. Adkins. After moving to San Antonio, she taught at Dellview Elementary until 1962, then moved to Austin and taught at Walnut Creek Elementary until retiring. She also was pianist at church. She is survived by her sister, Nellie Mae Scott Craven; cousins, Dick and Glen McWil-liams; their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14, at Guinn-Horger Chapel. Funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church. The casket carriers were Willie Scott, Glenn McWilliams, Jim Craven, Scott Craven, Daniel Craven, Aaron Craven. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
