Aleen Grell Bohlen, age 87, of Hondo passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009. Aleen was born Aug. 13, 1922, to Otto and Minnie Boehle Grell. She attended Hondo High School, graduating in 1939. She married Roy John Bohlen on August 22, 1940, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Quihi and they started their life together in Hondo. Aleen worked at various bookkeeping jobs. When World War II broke out, Roy and Aleen moved to Orange, Texas, for eight years to serve their country as civil service employees. At the end of the war, the couple returned to Hondo. Upon their return, the couple purchased their first beer distributorship, Grand Prize Beer. Aleen worked side by side with Roy for the next 30 years in this business. After retirement in 1981, she and Roy enjoyed their ranches, especially the weekends when all the family came together to have fun. Aleen was a loving wife, mother, and "MeeMaw" to her six grandchildren. Her family was her life. Aleen was raised in the Lutheran church. During her childhood she belonged to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Quihi where she was baptized on October 3, 1922. She was confirmed in the same church on September 15, 1935. In 1963, she became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo where her membership remained until her death. She is survived by her two sons, Alan Bohlen and wife Linda of Hondo and Galen Bohlen and wife Lillie of San Antonio; six grandchildren, Juliana, Kelsey, and Brooke Bohlen of Hondo and Lauren, Kristen, and Kyle Bohlen of San Antonio; and sisters-in-law, Velma Saathoff, Shirley Grell, Mary Ann Hartmann; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years; her parents; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Clarence Haass, Marvin Grell and Lillian Grell, Clarence and Della Bohlen, Ester and Clarence Saathoff, Lucille and Ehme Saathoff, and Harold and Wilma Bohlen. The Guinn-Horger Chapel will be open for visitation Sunday, Nov. 1, 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held Monday, Nov. 2, 10 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo with Pastor Dave Mayer officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Section of Hondo Cemetery. Pallbearers are Howard Saathoff, Cordell Bohlen, Bobby Bohlen, Ron Wilcut, Richard Dudley, and J. E. Saathoff.
