Alice Svensen Balazs, 90, of Devine passed away Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018. Born in Cando, North Dakota, Jan. 26, 1927, she was the daughter of Nels and Helen Halse Svensen. Her early childhood was in Cando, ND. When she was 13 she went to the east coast to work in Winterthur for the DuPont family. She traveled throughout the east and Midwest, eventually meeting her husband, John, and started a family. They resided 30 years in Wisconsin where Alice was a professional tax preparer for over 25 years. Alice and John traveled around the world as he was a consulting executive chef for the Hilton Corporation. They retired to San Antonio in 1989. After her husband s passing, Alice flew over a hundred thousand miles with her daughter, an airline captain, to Europe and Asia. Alice was a member of the Alamo Quilt Guild and San Antonio Quilt Guild. She had her own bee, the Shooting Star Quilters. Alice s legacy is in the hundreds of quilts she made and gifted to friends around the world. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John. Survivors include her daughters, Cathy Balazs of Buffalo MN and Marguerite Marge Balazs of Devine; sons, James Balazs of McKinney and Alexander Balazs of Warrenton VA along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
