Obituary

Jane Lester Martin, age 83, long-time resident of Hondo, Texas, went to be with the Lord on May 25, 2018. She was born to Owen and Jewel Lester in Millett, Texas, July 29, 1934. She attended Moore, Yancey, and Pearsall schools, playing volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, and twirling. She graduated from Pearsalt High School in 1952. After high school, Jane attended Draughon's Business College majoring in business administration. She became an Executive Secretary at Southwestern Bell. Jane married her high school sweetheart, Oliver Martin, on December 5, 1953. They were married for 59 wonderful years. After marrying, she made the decision to stay at home and become a fulltime homemaker. Jane's interests included cooking, sewing, gardening, canning, and shopping. She was an excellent seamstress and helped the family budget by making all of her and her children's clothes for many years. She worked side by side with Oliver in his pursuit of their beekeeping and cattle operations. Jane enjoyed spending time pursuing several different interests. One of her greatest pleasures was traveling with her husband, Oliver. They took their children on many road trip adventures during the summers as they were growing up and later enjoyed traveling internationally with their friends. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Hondo, serving for a time as president of the FUMC United Methodist Women. Jane was a member of Hondo Garden Club and led many Campfire Girl troops. She never missed a chance to serve as room mother for her children's classes in the Hondo Independent School District. Jane was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oliver Ross Martin; her parents, Owen and Jewel (Stone) Lester; in-laws, Ed and Cleo Martin; and brothers-in-law, Bill Welsch and Rev. Fred Martin. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Faseler and husband Johnny; her four children, Janice Martin-Drabier and husband John, Jack R. Martin, Linda Bohlen and husband Alan, and Joan Horton; her blessed grandchildren, Brian Dunn, Sara Dunn, Jack Aaron Martin, Kristen Gomez, and husband Johnny, Beth Wright, Juliana Lingo and husband Sam, Kelsey Bohlen, Brooke Bohlen, Sean Horton and Amanda Horton; and five great-grandchildren, McKinley and Madison Wright, Kaylee and Chloe Lingo, and Jake Gomez. Surviving in-laws are Mary Lee Welsch, Homer Martin and Janice Martin and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Medina Regional Hospital Auxiliary, First United Methodist Church of Hondo, Yancey United Methodist Church, or a charity of one's choice. Visitation will be Thursday, May 31,2018, from 9 to 10 a.m., prior to the funeral service at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Hondo, followed by interment at Yancey Cemetery.
