Obituary

Allen Franklin "Mac" McGuffin, 84, of Hondo, Texas passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2007. His legacy is that of a loving husband, devoted father/grandfather, successful businessman, and humanitarian. He practiced his faith everyday and attended St. John the Evangelist Church in Hondo. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Isabel Engel McGuffin; his son, David McGuffin and wife Phyllis Lea; his grandchildren, Chad McGuffin, Amy McGuffin, and Katie Griffin; and his great-grandchildren, Garrett and Jadyn. He is also survived by his Aunt Roene Coffey of Kerrville, and sisters-in-law, Genevieve Jones and Joyce McGuffin of Boerne, Thekla McGuffin of San Antonio, and Jan McGuffin of Warner Robbins, Georgia. Mac was born on August 12, 1922, in Field Creek, Texas to Katie Davis McGuffin and Claude Monroe McGuffin. He had five brothers and two half-brothers. He was preceded in death by his son; Ronald "Ronnie" McGuffin; parents; and siblings, J. T. McGuffin, M. C. "Shorty" McGuffin, Claude "Babe" McGuffin, James "Luke" McGuffin, Larry "Pete" McGuffin, J. W. "Jay" McGuffin and Emmett "Bud" McGuffin. Mac served his country during WW II in the U. S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Essex, an aircraft carrier, for three years and was engaged in all the major South Pacific naval battles. After the war and marriage, he operated a Sinclair service station in Bergheim, Texas. In 1957, he bought the Falstaff Beer Distributorship in Medina and Uvalde counties and moved his family to Hondo. In the 1970s he added Miller Brewing Company brands and re-named his business Valdina Beer Distributors. Valdina Beer Distributors was awarded the coveted Miller Master Award four times. He and his wife were founding members of Medina County Association for Exceptional Citizens, an organization serving mentally challenged children and adults. Mac served as its president for over 20 years. He was a past Commander of the American Legion Post, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a retired member and past president of the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department, a past president of the Hermann Sons Lodge, a member of the Holy Name Society, a member of the Quihi Gun Club, and a member of the Germania Farmerverien in Anhalt. Mac was presented the Cornerstone Award by the Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce, the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award by the Woodmen of the World, and the Conservationist of the Year Award by the Texas Soil and Water Conservation District. In addition to spending time with his family and in serving the community, Mac enjoyed ranching and playing cards (pitch). Mac was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1994 and fought the ravaging effects of it without a complaint. His perseverance, attitude, and faith inspired all who knew him. Services are as follows; Rosary, Friday June 15, 2007, 7 P.M. at St. John's Catholic Church in Hondo; Funeral Mass, Saturday June16, 2007, 11 A.M. at St. John's Catholic Church in Hondo; Interment, Saturday June 16, 2007, 2:30 P.M. at St. Joseph' Cemetery in Honey Creek. The pallbearers are Stanley Jones, Brian Cobb, Jerry McGuffin, Carlos Hernandez, Robert Graff and James Tschirhart. Memorials may be made to St. John's Catholic Church in Hondo or Medina Healthcare Fund.
