Antonio N. "Toño" Hernandez

Antonio “Toño” Hernandez, a retired laborer and lifelong resident of Hondo, Texas, died Oct. 30, 2026, at the age of 89.

Toño was born in Hondo on Jan. 14, 1937, to parents Francisco and Ramona Hernandez. On Aug. 9, 1959, he married Clara Pruñeda.

He enjoyed watching all football games on television. One of his favorite pasttimes was gambling—he loved scratching lottery tickets and playing slot machines at the casinos.

He especially loved when his family members from Arizona and Colorado came to visit him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara; his parents; his sister, Margarita “Mage” Olibarria; brothers, Rosalio “Chalio” Hernandez and Roberto “Bugs” Hernandez.

Toño is survived by his brother and sisters and their spouses, Benardo (Juanita) Hernandez, Josefina Gonzales, Olivia Rosales, Adelina Armenta, Belia Hernandez (Mike Mendoza) and Nelda Hernandez; and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are a special step-granddaughter, Criselda Leyva Bovinette, and her family, Ricky Hernandez, Ryan Hernandez, Julia Cuellar, Kristen McNew and Kaylin Bovinette.

Visitation from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by funeral service at 10:00 a.m., will be held Friday, Nov. 6, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
