Obituary

Archie Ray Gerdes, Quihi rancher, passed away, June 1, 2011, at the age of 80. The son of Herman and Elsie (Oefinger) Gerdes, Archie was born Dec. 10, 1930. He was a lifelong member of Quihi Bethlelem Lutheran Church, baptized Mar. 22, 1931, and confirmed Sept. 2, 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from Jan. 3, 1951, until Nov. 3, 1954. He later worked at Kelly AFB until he retired in 1985. A hard worker, he continued ranching on the family ranch. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and making barbecue for family gatherings and various organizations. He was a member of MCEAA, Quihi/New Fountain Historical Society, American Legion Post 460, and Hermann Sons Dunlay Lodge No. 285. Archie was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Bill Snyder. He is survived by his wife, Linda Longoria Hernandez Gerdes, whom he married on Feb. 14, 1980. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary Belle Snyder of Quihi and Margie Sampson of San Antonio; three nephews, two nieces; great-nephews and great-nieces. Funeral service is Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Quihi. Interment will be at Quihi Cemetery. The casket carriers were Larry Coyle, Billy Snyder, Sherrie Lynn Beralek, Richard Snyder, Kim D'Amato, Don Beralek. The honorary casket carriers were Krystal Beralek, and Mike Williams. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church Building Fund or the charity of one's choice.
