Arnold Ehme Saathoff was born in Hondo on September 9, 1920 to Albert and Helena Leinweber Saathoff. He passed away on Thursday April 30, 2009 at the age of 88. On September 4, 1941, Arnold married Glenrose Brucks Saathoff and they began their life together on the farm that he had purchased, in the house built by Glenrose's father, Alfred Brucks. He lived on the property the rest of his life. Together he and Glenrose raised two daughters, Glenetta and Tangee. Arnold was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran church where he served several years on the church council. He was a member of the Quihi Gun Club and Hermann Sons for over 60 years. He enjoyed going to lodge meetings, playing cards with his friends, and square dancing with his wife and other couples from Hondo. Arnold lived off of the land as a successful dry-land farmer and rancher. Together with his younger brother Floyd, he raised corn and maize in notoriously straight rows on family land and leased property around Hondo. He farmed until he was 62, then continued to raise cattle at his home and his ranch North of Hondo. He loved his ranch, where he hosted many gatherings of hunters, friends and family. Making sausage became an annual event, and a tradition that he has passed on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Not one to sit still, he could often be seen driving his pickup in and around town during the last few years of his life. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Meta Hahn Saathoff, his brother, Edgar Saathoff and his sister, Elna Hickey.
