Obituary

Barbara Mae Pope of Hondo, Texas, passed away November 27, 2005, at the age of 83. She was born December 22, 1921, in New Orleans, LA, the daughter of Fred & Rachel (Cambre) Estopinal. She was the oldest of five children. After graduating from Louisiana State University, she went to work at Standard Oil in Baton Rouge. It was during that time when she met the handsome and charming Robert Glenn Pope at a USO function. They were married September 18, 1944 and lived in several states while Robert was in active military duty. Hondo became their permanent home in 1954. In 1961, Barbara began her teaching career in D'Hanis in the field oh home economics. She returned to college, earning a Master's Degree from Our Lady of the Lake College in May 1968. Proudly attending her graduation was her husband and all 9 children. After 6 years in D'Hanis, transfered to Hondo where she taught 1st grade, and retired after 20 years of service. After her retirement she happily indulged in her love of travel. With family and friends she toured Europe and the Caribbean. New "adventures" included golfing and watercolor painting. In more recent years she became an avid quilter, placing in several fair competitions. She kept a menagerie of hummingbirds outside her kitchen window and delighted in their winged jousting. Although Barbara wasn't a swimmer, she made an annual trek with "The Golden Girls" to the beach for a week of card playing and taking the requisite "swim photo". The LSU Tigers, The New Orleans Saints, The San Antonio Spurs, (and back in the day, The Dallas Cowboys) were all her favorite sport teams. Her cultural interests included seasons at ths San Antonio Symphony and the Majestic Theater. One of her most favorite activities was family reunions. Nothing pleased her more than having all her siblings, children and grandchildren by her side. Barbara was a lifelong member of St John's Catholic Church and until recently faithfully attended weekly Mass. This past September she and her husband celebrated 61 years of marriage. Although she remained a Louisianan by birth and never considered herself a Texan, she loved her home of nearly 60 years here in Hondo and treasured all her dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Peter Pope. Barbara is survived by her husband Robert Glenn Pope of Hondo; sons Robert Pope, Jr. and wife Mara of Seattle, WA, Edward Pope of San Francisco, CA, Paul Pope and wife Debra of Anna; daughters Fredee Carr and husband David of New Braunfels, Mary Beth Hollahan and husband George of Austin, Cherie Guy and husband Jim of Austin, Maureen Lane and husband Ron of Hondo, Michele Hartung and husband Bobby of Hondo; 11 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren; brother Fred Estopinal, Jr. and wife Gloria of New Orleans, LA; sisters Dorothy Ginn and husband Wilbur of Greenville, SC, Janet Shaw and husband Gene of Pittsburg, PA, Mildred Schindler and husband Jack of Bokelia, FL.
