Barbara Ellen Patterson Rendon, a loving wife and mother, lost her courageous battle with breast cancer on Monday, March 15, with her family by her side. She was 52. Barbara was born March 29, 1957, in Wheeling, West Virginia. She was reared in Follansbee, West Virginia. She graduated from Brooke High School and later received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from West Liberty State College. Barbara married Robert Rendon of Hondo on August 7, 1982. They have two sons, Robert Paul and David Justin. The family lived in Hondo before moving to Yancey. Barbara touched the lives of hundreds of students at Meyer Elementary School where she worked as a reading specialist, and recently, was recognized for 20 years of service. Barbara and Bobby were active with the Hondo Band Boosters while both sons were in the Owl Band. Their participation with the booster club continued even after the boys graduated. Both were recognized as honorary band boosters. Barbara is survived by her husband, Robert, sons, U.S. Marine Sgt. Robert Paul and his wife, Casey, of San Diego, California, and David Justin Rendon of Yancey; her father, Paul R. Cross of Follansbee, West Virginia; her brother, John Patterson and his wife, Karin Pryor, of Chesapeake, Virginia; sisters, Patty Cross and her husband, Dick, of Follansbee, West Virginia, and Sarah Hostetter, and her husband, David of Whiting, Maine; mother-in-law Dora Rendon of Hondo; sister-in-law Ruth Rendon Duke and her husband, Kevin, of League City, and Linda Rendon of Hondo, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, Gene Ann Potter Cross, and brother-in-law, Raul Rendon. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 16, from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home. The rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 16, at the Guinn-Horger Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be at 11:00 am on March 17, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo. Burial will follow at the Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
