Obituary

Bernard Duane Baker of Hondo, 76, passed away Wednesday, Mar, 7, 2018. Born Aug. 31, 1941, in Devine, he was the son of Melvin G. Baker Sr. and Florence Fay Compton Baker. He was the third of four children and is preceded in death by his brothers, Melvin G. Baker, Jr. and Richard Dale Baker; and sister, Melba Fay Fohn. Duane was a jack of all trades, with skills in many areas. There was nothing he couldn't fix. He used these skills working at Universal Rundle, Jack Winkler Motors and his own Baker's Gulf Station. Duane was also known for his joke telling, spreading laughter each week on his routes working for UniFirst. His clients couldn't wait to hear the latest joke of the week which he could deliver with the skill of a professional comedian. These jokes continued at his job working at Tire and Wheel Connection. In 1961 he met the love of his life at the Battle of Flowers Parade in San Antonio. He married Carolyn Louise Boehle on June 8, 1963 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Quihi where they both were active members of the congregation. Duane served on the church council for many years, also serving as a Deacon and a hard worker during the church annual sausage dinner. Duane and Carolyn shared 46 years of marriage until her death in April of 2010. Duane also served outside the church. He was a long-time member of the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department, winning an award one year for responding to the most fires. He was an active volunteer for his daughter's clubs and activities, including serving as Hondo Band Booster president. A true Hondo Owl fan, he kept the same 50-yard line football seats at Barry Field for 50 years. Friday nights during football season you knew where to find him. One of the best skills Duane possessed was as grandpa, Paw Paw as he was known by his grandkids. He was the ultimate Paw Paw, sharing his love of hunting and fishing with them as well as being their biggest supporter for every dance recital, ball game, tournament or contest in which they participated. You could find him in a Uvalde Coyote maroon shirt cheering on Katelyn or Clay or in D'Hanis purple cheering for Jacie and Jett. No matter the outcome of their events he was there waiting to give them a hug and tell them how proud he was of them. Duane was a man of great faith who leaves a strong legacy of hard work, dedication and service. We know that he is rejoicing with the Lord, his wife and family. He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Tracy) King of Uvalde and Laurie (Justin) Henefey of D'Hanis; grandchildren, Katelyn King, Clayton King, Jacie Henefey and Jett Henefey; and sisters-in-law, Helen (Franklin) Muennink of Hondo and Jaynee Baker of Devine. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Saturday, Mar. 10, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Quihi. Interment followed at Quihi Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 3901 FM 2676, Hondo TX 78861.
