Bernard Lee "Sonny" Lanning of Hondo, age 70, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017. Born Sept. 29, 1946, in Des Moines, IA, he was the son of Bernard Eugene and Dottie Jean DeCamp Lanning. Sonny served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam War, retiring as a Tech Sergeant after 17 years. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and devoted husband Sonny had an enthusiasm for sports, especially playing fast pitch softball throughout his military career. He had a love for fishing, riding motorcycles, playing cards with family and friends, and vacations to Laughlin, NV. Sonny was well-known for his joke telling and always making his loved ones laugh. He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Rusty Pierce; stepmother, Dorothy Lanning; and brother, Harold Pierce. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Aldeen Weber Lanning of Hondo; sons, Lonnie (Yvette) Lanning of Hondo and Nathan Lanning of Corpus Christi; granddaughters, Chelsea Lanning (Regy) Ormond, M'Lea Lanning and Amanda Lanning; eight great-grandchildren; and brothers, Jim S. Pierce of South Carolina and Don Pierce of Oregon. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 28, at First United Methodist Church, Hondo. Service will conclude at the church.
