Bernice Elizabeth (Brucks) Hermes, age 90, of Hondo passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014. Born in Dunlay, Feb. 28, 1924, she was the daughter of Willie J. and Rosa (Riff) Brucks, who preceded her in death. Bernice attended Dunlay School through the sixth grade and then went to St. John's Catholic School for two years. She graduated from Hondo High School in 1941. After graduation, she went to work for L. B. Grell's Store. She saved enough of her wages that when she and Hubert Hermes married on Feb. 17, 1942, she was able to pay for her own wedding. She worked at Hondo Army Air Field during the mid-1940s, for Texas Aviation Industries (TAI), Gary Aircraft, Moehring's True Value Hardware and then Ulbrich's. In 1981, she went to work for St. John's Catholic Church for six years, retiring in 1987. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Hubert; son, Larry J. Hermes and wife Dorothy of San Antonio; daughter, Marcy Pauling and husband Jim of Hondo; grandchildren, Scott Hermes and wife Allison, Sheryn Lee Bertling and husband Curtis, Dale Edward Zerr and wife Susie, Lori Beth Zerr and Wayne Anthony Zerr; and seven great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 7. A Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. followed by Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. Her great-grandchildren, Garrett Hermes, Emmett Hermes, Curtis "C.J." Bertling, Maycie Bertling, Cody Zerr, Cassandra Zerr and Dual Zerr, are honorary pallbearers. Pallbearers are Scott Hermes, Curtis Bertling, Dale Zerr, Wayne Zerr, Fred Schueling and Rusty Beard. The family suggests memorials may be made to Medina County Nutrition Center or Medina Healthcare Fund.
