Obituary

Major Berton Bradley Barrett (retired U.S. Army Major), born on July, 23 1944, in Selma AL, passed away Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020. He was 76.

Bert, as he was known to friends, graduated Avon High School in Avon CT in 1961; Syracuse University, Syracuse NY, graduating 12/23/1974 with a Bachelor of Science Degree; and the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley CO, graduating 6/3/1978 with a Master of Science Degree.

Bert's military career began in the U. S. Navy when he enlisted at Palm Springs, CA. in May 1965. After basic training in San Diego, CA, he attended Machinist Mate A School in Great Lakes, IL. Assigned to USS Nereus Submarine Tender San Diego CA, he worked on both Conventional and Nuclear subs, making repairs and ship all job orders. He spent most of his work time aboard subs. Next, he went to Nuclear Power School at Mare Island, Vallejo, CA, then on to Arco, ID, where he attended the Westinghouse nuclear prototype for six months. After graduating from that course, he was selected to remain there as an instructor for the next two years. There he operated and trained personnel on a type of nuclear plant similar to one on the USS Enterprise. In 1969 he was assigned to USS Enterprise CVAN 65. There he operated one of the nuclear power plants. He received an honorable discharge (E-6) on May 17, 1972, and returned to college at Syracuse University.

Medals he received included the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 campaign stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and First Good Conduct Medal

He returned to military life when he enlisted in the U. S. Army as an E5 at Syracuse, on 2/23/1976 and went to Basic Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He was assigned to Letterman Army Institute of Research, LAIR, the Presidio of San Francisco, as a biological sciences assistant. There he worked on an experimental project designed to extend the approved life of stored blood and blood products.

After acquiring his Masters Degree while working at LAIR, he received his commission (2nd Lt) and attended Medical Service Corps Officer Basic Course in Fort Sam Houston, TX. Following graduation, he was assigned to the 4th Medical Battalion, Fort Carson, CO, where he was Clearing Platoon Leader and Battalion Motor Poll Officer. Next he became the Commanding Officer of the Student Company with over 400 students and the Medical Holding Company with over 50 soldiers at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center, Denver, CO.

After attending the Medical Service Corps Advanced Officer Course, he was assigned to the Health Service Command, Fort Sam Houston, where he worked as the Administrative Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff for Clinical Services. Next, assigned to Korea, he worked as a Medical Plans Officer for the Operations section of 18 Medical Command. After a year there doing work that was classified Top Secret, he was reassigned to Health Service Command at Fort Sam Houston. He retired as a Major on 10/31/1993.

Medals he received included the Meritorious Service Medal (1st oak leaf cluster), Army Commendation Medal (5th oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal (3rd oak leaf cluster), Army Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm.

After 1993 he worked as an office manager for a psychiatrist office in San Antonio until his retirement in 2009.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bailey M. and Lois Moore Barrett, and his in-laws, G.W. and Minna E. Powell.

Bert was married to the former Nancy Powell of Carlisle, PA, for 49 years.

They have a daughter, Buffie Rogge and husband Wm. Wade of Hondo, TX; son, Brant Barrett and wife Michelle of Oklahoma; grandchildren: Wesley Rogge and wife Cassidy, Baylee Rogge, Taylor Barrett and Ayden Barrett; and several cousins.

He loved visits from his grandchildren, telling them jokes and funny stories, and helping them with their homework. His favorite pass-times were playing golf and betting on the horses at Retama Race Track.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Guinn-Horger Chapel to share memories and celebrate his life on Monday, Aug. 24, from or 6 to 8 p.m.
