Bettie Jeannene Curtis Cogburn of Hondo passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, at the age of 89.
Bettie was born Jan. 18, 1930, in San Antonio, the first of five children born to Effie Beulah Stephenson and Martin Delbert Curtis.
Bettie graduated Cotulla High School in 1947 and Southwestern University in 1951. There, she was president of her sorority, Delta Zeta.
She met Bill Cogburn in January 1953 in Corpus Christi, where she was teaching school. They married in June 1953. To this union, three children were born, Susan Elizabeth, William Curtis and Sammi Courtney.
While living in Abilene, they were very involved in community service. Bettie was on the board of directors of Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra. She was also president and ball chairman of the Symphony Guild, on the board of the Abilene Fine Arts Museum at Rose Park, a docent and secretary of the guild, and executive secretary of the March of Dimes, as well as a volunteer for several local charities.
In Hondo, she taught Head Start at Meyer Elementary for many years.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Billy D. Cogburn; grandson, William D. Cogburn; brother, Jack Curtis; and sister, Channy Holcomb.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan (Lennon) Wright of Houston and Courtney Davis of San Antonio; son, Dr. Wm. Curtis (Sandra) Cogburn of Lytle; six wonderful grandchildren, Christopher (Ann) Wright and Taylor (Paige) Wright, David Cogburn, Brian Cogburn, Connley (Gabriella) Davis and Chase Davis; four great-grandchildren, Pearl, Colt and Lula Wright and Carmen Davis; brother, Paul (Diane) Curtis of Liberty Hill; and sister, Linda Hayes of Hondo; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, followed by 11 a.m. funeral service, at First United Methodist Church in Hondo. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
