Obituary

Betty J. Dean Zerr of Hondo, 86, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017. Born in Medina, July 29, 1930, she was the daughter of Lewis Hope Dean and Neva Elvira Silvers Dean. Betty was a devout Catholic whose faith in God was unwavering. She lived her life surrounded by loving family and friends, and, along with her church, that was most important to her. Her faith and reliance on strong family values defined who she was as a person. Always loving, caring and supportive, the front door of Betty's home was always open to those who needed it and to those who were just a little hungry. Betty and her late husband, Metz, raised two daughters with that same strong sense of family. Those daughters went on to provide Betty with four grandsons who she also helped mold in the same way. Over the last 8 years, her heart was joyed to be able to also help raise 5 great-grandchildren. Truly nothing made her happier than seeing a house full of all 11 of her "babies." You would struggle to find anyone who ever met Betty and wasn't touched by her strong values and beliefs. She truly made an impact on all of those she came in contact with and her family and friends alike credit her with helping make them the people they are today. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Maurice Joseph "Metz" Zerr; and brothers, Glenn, L.H. Jr., Jerry and Don Dean Survivors include her daughters, Judith (Gordon) Whitwell of Albuquerque NM and Ginny (Barry) Braden of Hondo; grandchildren, Adam Beesley of California, Chris (Marissa) Braden of Hondo, John (Kaylene) Braden of Kyle and Greg (LaRissa) Whitwell of Arizona; great-grandchildren, Kase Braden, Kylar Braden, Lily Braden, Noah Whitwell and Josephine Whitwell; sisters, Ann (Paul) Lutz, Joyce (Jim) Lutz-Gray, all of Hondo, Susan Manago of California, and brother, Bill (Barbara) Dean of Childress. Visitation will be Sunday July 23, 6 to 8 p.m., at Guinn-Horger Chapel. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., followed by Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., Monday, July 24, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, St. John's Section.
