Billie Jean Hilsher was born November sixteenth, nineteen hundred and twenty-eight, in San Antonio, Texas. She passed on into our Lord's care January fourth, two thousand and six. She was preceded in death by her parents John and Maude Roberson and brother Bobby Carrol Roberson. She was the beloved wife of E. J. Hilsher, Jr. for 58 loving years, and beloved mother of Sharon Darnell of San Antonio, Edward J. Hilsher, III of San Antonio, Jeffrey Wayne Hilsher of St. Louis, Missouri. Mrs. Hilsher is also survived by her grandchildren Justin D. Darnell, Matthew Hilsher, Sarah Hilsher, John Vernon Hilsher, Kathleen E. Hilsher, Jonathon Hilsher, and Rebecca Hilsher. Billie Jean graduated from Sabinal High School, attended Southwest Texas Teacher's College in San Marcos, and received her Baccalaureate and Master's Degrees from Trinity University in San Antonio. She taught first grade for thirty-three years at Meyer Elementry School in Hondo, before retiring in nineteen eighty-nine. To her, teaching wasn't a job, it was her passion. She taught her students to read and got them started on their life long quest for knowledge. She was loved and respected by her peers and her students and their parents. Billie Jean Hilsher spent most of her retirement days traveling with her family, bird watching, butterfly collecting and just plain loving what life had to offer. The Funeral Service, officiated by Pastor David Mayer, will be Tuesday, January 10, at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo. The Pallbearers were Justin Darnell, Jimmy Baresh, John V. Hilsher, Charles Brown, Jonathan Hilsher, Arthur Schuchert, Matthew Hilsher, Gary Hilsher. The Honorary Pallbearers were Clyde Parsons, Bud Woolls, Russell Peters, Douglas Peters, Roger Baresh. Interment will follow at 2:15 p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
