Calvin John "C.J." Mangold of Hondo, 92, passed away Friday, Jan. 13, 2017. Born June 28, 1924, in Castroville, he was the son of Leo J. and Laura Ann Schuehle Mangold. Involved in ranching all his life, he was an accomplished horseman and roper. At 18 years old C.J. went to work on the construction of Hondo Army Air Field, working around the clock driving a gravel truck. He later became a fireman with Texas Aviation Industries, drove a grain truck for Chapman Grain, and was a part-time butcher at the Red and White grocery store. Around 1958 he went to work as a lineman for Medina Electric Coop and retired as a line foreman in 1986. He and Leora enjoyed hosting family and friends at the ranch, playing card games and dominoes. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 70 years, Leora Boehme Mangold; and brother, Maj. Leon B. Mangold. He is survived by his sons, Calvin (Sherrie) Mangold of Rio Medina, Ronnie (Sandy) Mangold of Mico and Ken (Diane) Mangold of LaCoste; daughter, Bonnie Mangold Campa of Castroville; grandchildren, Mark (Dawn) Mangold, Lisa (Stephen) Hahne, Barrett (Jinny) Mangold, Bryce (Nora) Mangold, Kimberly (Darrell) Cox and Kari (Travis) Salzman; and great-grandchildren, Abigail and Chase Mangold, Joshua and Bradley Hahne, Tessa and Lanna Mangold, Leo Mangold, Callie and Casen Cox, Cooper and Courtney Salzman. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Guinn-Horger Chapel. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, at Quihi Cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
