Cathryn Campbell Smith (Cay, Grammy Cay), was born on April 22, 1923, in San Antonio and died on Nov. 18, 2011, in D'Hanis, surrounded by friends and family. Cay was the daughter of Claude Amos and Kate Kone Campbell. She graduated from Jefferson High School and Stephens College. She married Wilford David "Bill" Watts with whom she had two children, Wilford David Watts, Jr. and Cathryn "Tinka" Watts Langfeld. The Rev. Bill Watts predeceased her in 1958. After Bill's death, Cay graduated from the University of Texas of Austin, earning her bachelor's and master degrees in Social Work, and reared her two children. She later married Edward P. Smith, who brought his children Edwina C. Smith and David W. Smith to their family. Ed also predeceased her in 1993. Cay practiced Social Work and served on the faculty of Our Lady of the Lake University. She helped found the San Antonio Food Bank, serving on its first board. She served on other public service boards, such as Ella Austin Community Center, was very involved in her church, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and was an active member of the Fiber Artists, the Assistance League, and several other organizations. She also enjoyed traveling in her retirement years and visited many countries around the world. She even spent her 75th birthday on the Great Wall of China. She is survived by her children, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and her brother, The Rev. (retired) Claude Alan Campbell, and his wife Linda. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, San Antonio.
