Obituary

Charles Langdon Tilley, an Austin architect whose work as project manager of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidental Library, the Austin-Bergatrom International Airport, the Austin Convention Center, and the Robert E. Johnson Legislative Office Building helped define the Austin skyline, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at the age of 68. He was born in San Antonio, January 16, 1939, the son of Joy Langdon Tilley, Jr. & Arlyne Edna Elizabeth Kern Tilley. Charles was a member of the American Institute of Architects and worked at Texas firm PageSoutherlandPage, where he was, until recently, the director of operations for the Austin office. Prior to his longstanding service at PSP, he served as Director of Architectural Production at 3DI and worked at Brooks, Graeber and White. He studied architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1964. As a young architect working on the LBJ Library, Tilley met the former President to update him on the project's progress; he recalled that Johnson extended his pinky rather than a full handshake, following his doctor's orders to ease hand strain. Charles grew up in Hondo, Texas, the oldest of seven brothers and sisters. He was the Hondo's first newspaper boy, and was a member of the 1956 Hondo High School state football championship playoff team. Charles was a sixth generation Texan, descending from Walter Sutherland, a member of Stephen F. Austin's Old 300, and was also a descendant of the Mayflower. He was active in Austin's River City Youth Foundation. He is preceded in death by his parents. Charles is survived by his son, Paul L. Tilley and wife Cristina of Wilmette, IL; daughter, Elizabeth Margaret Smith and husband Russell of Austin; five grandchildren, Caroline and Margaret Tilley, and Emily, Katherine and Adam Smith; sisters, Joylene Bohmfalk and husband Clyde of Hondo, Gaye Wunsch and husband Ron of Muldoon; brother, Noel Kern Tilley of Hondo; sister, Kevin Bader and husband Fred of Hondo; brothers Tobin Tilley and wife Jeanette of Kerrville, Ray Don Tilley and wife Diane of Lakeway. The Funeral Service was at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday May 31, at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial followed in the Evergreen Cemetery, Devine, Texas.
