Charlie
Soliz
July 11, 1945 – August 11, 2020
Charlie (Carlos D.) Soliz of Yancey passed away Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2020. He was 75.
Charlie was born July 11, 1945, in Hondo, Texas. He was the son of Francisco and Maria Delgado Soliz.
Charlie attended Southwestern Adventist University at Keene, Texas. While there he met his wife Eunice and earned his bachelor's degree. Charlie wanted to take his education to the next level and got his Master of Education at Tarleton State University (then a part of the Texas A&M University System) at Stephenville, Texas.
His first work assignment was as Dean of Boys at Valley Grande Academy in Weslaco, Texas. He was then offered a position at his alma mater, Southwestern Adventist University, as Dean of Men. In 1977, Charlie was offered the position as Dean of Men at Loma Linda University-La Sierra campus. There were students from 91 different countries, some enrolled at the La Sierra campus for liberal arts, science, and business. Many of these students would continue their degrees in Loma Linda at the medical campus. He was always an advocate for the students, motivating them to accomplish their dreams. He was instrumental in developing new policies and procedures in student management. He also built the first fitness center at Sierra Towers in La Sierra. After 23 years of service he retired from La Sierra.
He was an innovative thinker, always thinking "outside the box", he was assertive, and had great courage. Charlie enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He is known for having a warm smile and a contagious laugh. Activities he enjoyed were road trips both near and far, playing golf, frequent visits to San Diego, California, listening to 50's and 60's music, and restoring classic cars.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Annie Borrego; and brother-in-law, Dennis Garza.
He is survived by his wife, Eunice of Yancey; son, Chuck (Abby) Soliz of Lago Vista; and sisters, Angie Garza of San Antonio, Frances (Keith) Bolin of Sidney OH, and Linda (Scott) Stewart of San Antonio; and brother-in-law, Andrew Borrego of San Antonio.
