Obituary

Clyde Earle Harris, Sr. of Yancey, 76, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016. Born Oct. 25, 1939, in Fincastle, VA, he was the son of Charles Elmer and Myrtle Kessler Harris. Clyde enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959 and completed his basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. He was stationed at Ellington Field, Houston, TX; Balikeshir Air Base, Turkey; Misawa AB, Japan; Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, TX; Phan Rang AB and Tuy Hoa AB, Republic of Vietnam, and Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. He was a Staff Sergeant (E-5) working Security Forces and holding a Top Secret Security Clearance at the time of discharge in 1968. While stationed in Del Rio, Clyde and met and married his wife, Carolyn L. Boggus of Yancey. Clyde and Carolyn celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on March 30, 2016. After serving in the Air Force, Clyde served as U.S. Postmaster at Yancey, Moore and Atascosa offices. He retired from the USPS with over 20 years of service. After retirement, he served as a contractor with the USPS, adjusting rural routes for all of South Texas. He was a farmer and rancher and enjoyed hunting, playing dominoes, bowling and drinking his coffee on the front porch. He and his wife lived on and worked the family farm in Yancey for 42 years. He was a member and volunteered at the Yancey United Methodist Church, mowing lawns, as handyman and became known for his BBQ brisket at the Yancey Homecoming. He previously served on both the Board of Trustees and Church Board. He previously served on the board of the Medina County Crime Stoppers. Clyde especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jacqueline Beyers; brother, Shelby "Buzzy" Harris; and infant sister, Butterfly. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn L. Boggus Harris; son, Clyde E. "Buddy" Jr. (Jennifer) Harris of New Braunfels; daughters, Cynthia (Stanley) Stanukinos of Hondo and Cheryl (Albert) Dawson of Wichita Falls; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Dennis (Barbara) Harris of Troutville, VA and Marvin (Linda Faye) Harris of Troutville, VA; sister, Sylvia Crawford of Ridgeway SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Saturday, May 21, 4 to 6 p.m., at the Guinn-Horger Chapel. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 22, at Yancey Methodist Church, followed by interment at Yancey Cemetery.
