Former Medina County Judge David F. Montgomery of Hondo, age 70, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2016. Born June 27, 1946 at Black Creek, he was the son of Knox Alexander and Ollie Estel DuBose Montgomery. He married Irene Lutz of Hondo November 20, 1965. David was a down-to-earth person who never knew a stranger. He always had a smile and handshake for everyone he met. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and devoted friend. If you were new in town, he would make you feel as if you had been here forever. David was an avid antique collector, outdoorsman, and car enthusiast. He was well-known for the many old cars he restored and drove over the years; that hobby even landed him a place in the annals of movie history when he was asked to restore several 1957 Chevrolet cars for the 1991 Knight Rider 2000 TV movie. Most of David's adult life was spent in public service, first as the Assistant Street Superintendent for the City of Hondo from 1970 to 1978, and later in county government as Medina County Commissioner (1981-89) and Medina County Judge (1995-2002). He was instrumental in the formation of the 19-county Hill Country MHMR Center and served as its first chairman of the board. He was very proud of this accomplishment. David loved people and helped them whenever he could. He always said that helping others was the greatest part of being county judge. He was knowledgeable about the history of Medina County and knew many stories about it. David was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. For many years, David was a fixture at the local Dairy Queen where he was part of the daily coffee drinking group, a routine that went way back. When he married and moved to Hondo, he joined the coffee drinking group at the old Frontier Cafe, where he was the youngest member sitting at the table each morning. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Alex Montgomery Jr. and Willis Olen Montgomery; brother-in-law, Floyd Neuman; brother-in-law, Leo Lutz; nieces, Angela Utterback and Tammie Ricord; and nephew, Wayne Neuman. He is survived by his wife, Irene Lutz Montgomery; son, David F. "Monty" Montgomery II of Hondo; daughter, Stacey Montgomery of McKinney; grandsons, Cory Van Dyke of Hondo and Parker Van Dyke of McKinney; siblings, Dorothy Neuman of Devine, Alvin (Linda) Montgomery of Lytle, Lou Ann (Jerry) Jones and Maudie (Grady) George; and sister-in-law, Lou Ann Evans, all of Devine; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral/prayer service was held Friday, October 28, at 10 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Interment was at Hondo Cemetery, Woodmen of the World Section. Pallbearers were nephews, Johnny Jones, Kirby Heartner, Robert Evans, Alex Evans, Clifford Evans, and Mike Newberry.
