Obituary

David A. "Whitey" Zinsmeyer, age 87, of D'Hanis passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at the Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veteran's Home at Floresville. Born July 25, 1926, in Hondo, he was the fourth son of Martin Albert and Dorothy Marie (Koch) Zinsmeyer's seven children. He lived across the street from Holy Cross Catholic Church and attended St. Anthony School. David, better known as Whitey, graduated from D'Hanis High School and immediately enlisted in the US Army Air Corps, to serve along with his three older brothers in World War II. He attended Texas State Teachers College in San Marcos, studying accounting. He returned to D'Hanis to work for his dad in his Texaco wholesale business, mostly as the bookkeeper. He worked there and elsewhere in Medina County, especially at Chapman Mill and Grain in Hondo, as bookkeeper and accountant. Always a single man, he freely made and kept great friends. His friendly, social personality assured that he was always "invited". He regularly participated in the infamous D'Hanis hunting camps, jolly competitions, games, song fests and celebrations of all sorts. He loved everybody's children and they all loved "Uncle Whitey". Active in Holy Cross Church affairs and organizations, he began as an altar boy, was a member of St. Joseph Society, and carried responsibilities for planning and conducting the church celebration each year. Whitey was always there to help make things happen as a church member and as a member of D'Hanis Lions Club and the D'Hanis Volunteer Fire Department. An avid photographer, he came to specialize in "doing weddings" wherever they were held. He loved to travel to distant places, often with friends and sometimes alone, but always with his cameras. After his brother, Bernie, "found" the Finger family relatives in Alsace, Whitey led social activities when the Alsatian Fingers visited Texas and when the Texas Fingers visited Alsace. Whitey was always in the midst of all those wonderful times. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joseph Martin "Joe" Zinsmeyer, James Vincent Zinsmeyer and Bernard Charles Zinsmeyer; and sister, Ellen Marie Spaight. Whitey is survived by his brother, Herbert Gerald Zinsmeyer and wife Lois of Cedar Park; sister, Emily Doris Floerke Beck of D'Hanis; and many nieces nephews and other relatives. Rosary at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, will be followed by Mass at 9:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, D'Hanis.
