Obituary

Dennis Edward Herrmann was born December 15, 1948, in Robstown, Texas, to Dan and Evelyn Herrmann, being the second of five children.  He died in his home in D'Hanis on Monday, November 6, 2023, surrounded by family and dear friends.

When he was in the 8th grade, his family moved to D'Hanis where they settled on a ranch south of town.  He enjoyed many sports in high school, excelling in football.  After high school, he went to the Devry Institute of Technology, and became a journeyman electrician.  While many of his classmates went to Vietnam, his number was too high to get called, so he joined the Texas Air National Guard and served 8 years.

He met Susan Rothe in the library at D'Hanis High School in 1965. They married in 1971 and were blessed with 52 years of marriage. He went to work for CPS Energy, the electric company in San Antonio, in 1971 and retired after 37 years.  They raised three children, two of whom they adopted.  They were blessed with 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Dennis coached Little League baseball for 18 years even though he had never played.  He learned to coach from other coaches, friends, and members of the community.  He also raised show pigs for 4-H and FFA kids for 25 years.  He never tired of going around to every home where his pigs were being raised to help prepare them for the upcoming shows.  Some of his pigs won Medina County Grand Champions in 2000, 2003, 2004 & 2007 and Uvalde County in 2000.  He made many friends and countless memories raising show pigs.  Dennis was also in the D'Hanis Lions Club for over 25 years, serving as president a few times.

A smart man with common sense, Dennis could build, fix or operate most anything.  He put in his own backyard pool, and finished out the upstairs attic of their old, remodeled farmhouse, making two additional bedrooms and a bathroom with the help of a construction book he read.  Projects like these and a giant garden kept him busy after work, on weekends, and in retirement.  He also loved hunting and fishing and loved even more taking his kids and grandkids with him.  He made hundreds of trips to the coast to "his" island in the bay, fishing for trout and reds.  In his latest years of life, his most favorite thing to do was to travel all over Texas to watch his grandkids play sports. He often asked after waking up "Is there a game today?"

Throughout his life, no matter what he was doing, he had a smile on his face and happiness in his heart as he lived life to the fullest every day.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Clyde Herrmann; brothers-in-law, Stan Reinhard and August Rothe; and sister-in-Law, Jennifer Rothe.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Burt (Lacy) and Joshua (Jacqulynn); and daughter, Brandi (Will) McDonald;  grandchildren, Summer (Mordy) McQuiller, Tyler Morrill, Mabry Herrmann, Layton Herrmann, Kenna Herrmann, Gabriel McDonald, Cassius Herrmann, Christian Herrmann, Cadence Herrmann, Naomi McDonald, and Tyson Herrmann; and great-grandchild, Addisyn McQuiller.

Also surviving are his sisters, Elaine Reinhard of Geronimo, Betsy Herrmann of Hondo, and Arlene (Steve) Marshall of Conroe; brothers-in-law, Charlie (Janet) Rothe, Tom (Marcy) Rothe, Rick Rothe, Mike (Shannon) Rothe, and sister-in-law, Peggy (Bill) Bendele, all of Hondo or DHanis, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Thank you to Holy Savior Hospice and to his wonderful caregivers, Brenda Morrow and Elva Garza, who made it possible for him to stay at home until the end.
