Wiemers Schulte
July 28, 1929 – September 6, 2021
Doris LaVerne Wiemers Schulte of Hondo, age 92, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2021.
LaVerne was born at home in Medina County, Texas, on July 28, 1929, to Theodore George Wiemers and Hulda Schneider Wiemers. She was the fourth child, having one brother, Franklin (Alice Frances) Wiemers, and three sisters, Frances (Mrs. L.J) Leinweber, June (Mrs. Jack) Fuos, and Imogene (Mrs. William C.) Meyers. She was baptized into the New Fountain United Methodist Church.
Growing up on the family farm southeast of Hondo, LaVerne and her siblings had the responsibility of caring for the chickens, goats and sheep. There were many family get-togethers with relatives from Medina County, and Kothmann and Schneider kinfolk from the Mason and Llano areas.
LaVerne attended Hondo High School, graduating with the class of 1947. After graduation, LaVerne moved to San Antonio to attend Draughon's Business College and lived in the Perry Kallison home, where she helped with the children's care for her room and board. After obtaining her degree she lived with her sister, Imogene, at their Aunt Lydia's home in San Antonio and worked at her first job for United Gas Company. In 1951, she moved home and worked as a secretary to the commander in Base Operations at the Hondo Army Airfield until her marriage.
On Nov. 24, 1951, she was married to Jerome Henry Schulte at New Fountain United Methodist Church. They celebrated 58 years of marriage together.
Their family includes daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Dennis Mann and Kay and Roby Somerford. Her grandchildren are Randy Mann, Steven and Megan Werner-Mann, Amy and Garett Armes, and Rachel and Jason Engel. Her great-grandchildren include Rebekah, Abigail, James and Alex Werner--Mann, and Owen Engel.
Jerome and LaVerne made their home in Hondo, with Jerome working for the U.S. Postal Service as one of the first two letter carriers delivering mail door-to-door in Hondo. LaVerne was a homemaker after her daughters were born. She then joined the staff of Hondo lSD as a library aide, working in the library of Meyer Elementary School. She loved dressing for holidays and reading stories to the children, who still remembered her after they had become adults, and whenever they saw her in town. She retired after 29 years of service.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerome; sisters, Frances (L.J.) Leinweber, June (Jack) Fuos; brother, Franklin (Alice Frances) Wiemers; brothers-in-law, William Meyers and Richard Schulte; and sister-in-law, Doris (Carl) Gordon.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren, along with her sister, Imogene Meyers; sister-in-law, Gayle Schulte; and brother-in-law, Clyde (Yvonne) Schulte.
Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hondo. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. Pallbearers include Randy Mann, Steven Mann, Garett Armes, and Jason Engel.
