EdWinnie Brown McWhirter of Hondo, passed away Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, the day before her 96th birthday. Born in Leonard, TX, she was the daughter of Ira Melton Brown and Lucy Patterson Brown. For 38 years EdWinnie taught public school students in Paducah, Commerce, Waco and Hondo. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Huajilla Unit of Retired Teachers Association and of Hondo Garden Club for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Weldon McWhirter; and daughter, Anna Lou McWhirter. Left to remember her legacy are her dear friends, Nancy Taylor Scott and husband Stan Scott of Boerne and Nola Hanson of Hondo, in addition to her teacher, line dance, church and garden club friends and the many, many students she taught over the years. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at First United Methodist Church, Hondo. Entombment will be at Hondo Cemetery, St. John Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund or Huajilla Unit of Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund.
