Obituary

Ehme Mathis Saathoff, age 94, of Hondo/Quihi passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007. He was born on Mar. 20, 1913, to Ehme Martin and Alwina (Moebius) Saathoff. Ehme was baptized July 13, 1913, at St. John's Lutheran Church in New Fountain and confirmed his Christian faith there on Sept. 12, 1926. He was a life-long member of the St. John's/Bethlehem Lutheran Parish. Ehme attended New Fountain School through the sixth grade, walking several miles, morning and evening. He quit school after the sixth grade to work on his dad's farm. On April 2, 1936, he married Lucille Bohlen in Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children, Emaleen, Loretta and J. E. After 42 years of marriage, Lucille passed to the Lord's Kingdom on Dec. 7, 1978. On June 28, 1980, Ehme married his beloved wife, Velma Schmidt Burger, and was blessed with three stepchildren, Jessie Ray, Margie and David Burger. He dedicated his life to farming and ranching. When he was not on the tractor, he spent thousands of hours visiting with family and friends, playing pitch or dominoes, and making family memories. After eighty-plus years of breaking the south central Texas soil, praying for rain and wrestling stubborn cows, he is now at rest. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lucille (Bohlen) Saathoff; daughter, Emaleen Cain; brothers, Rolf Saathoff, Mathis Saathoff, and Alfred Saathoff; and sisters, Ida Mae Cole and Frieda Saathoff; half-brothers, Kurt Scharf, Albert Scharf, and Albert Saathoff; and half-sisters, Christina Saathoff, Antje Nietenhoefer and Olga Nietenhoefer. He is survived by his children, Loretta Schirmer and husband Dennis of Corpus Christi and J. E. Saathoff of Hondo; stepchildren, Jessie Ray Burger, Margie Burger Doran and husband Jim, and David Burger and wife Sue; six grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren; in-laws, Jim Cain, Wilfreen Saathoff, Della Bohlen, and Roy and Aleen Bohlen; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service was held Saturday, Aug. 18, 10 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Quihi. Interment was at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. The family suggests that memorials be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 3901 FM 2676, Hondo, or Medina Healthcare Fund, c/o Medina Community Hospital, 3100 Ave. E, Hondo 78861.
