Eliza Schwartz Bishop, 85, of Hondo, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017. Born Aug. 16, 1932, in Laredo, she was the daughter of Charles and Consuelo Quijano Schwartz. Eliza was one of a kind. She was one of the strongest, smartest yet modest women you would ever meet. A three-time cancer survivor she never allowed herself to feel defeated by illness, but instead pushed forward to place her energy on those things she was most passionate about: her family and her pets. She had a special connection with animals and was always willing to adopt a pet needing a home, whether it was a stray kitten or pair of turtles. She was a wonderful cook, and family looked forward to those events that brought them together when she would cook. She loved her grandkids and would cook favorite meals for them and their friends whenever she got the chance. She never let her health limitations keep her from going as much as she could, and she loved to hear the Hondo Owl band and attended competitions whenever she could. Although she never hit it big, she enjoyed her trips to the casino and playing the slots. Eliza is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years, Karl Edward Bishop Sr.; son, Karl Edward "Eddie" Bishop, Jr.; brother, Charles Schwartz; and sister, Meme Cortez. She is survived by daughter, Patricia "Patti" (Joseph "J.D.") Gonzales of Hondo; son, Andrew "Andy" (Michele) Bishop of Allen; four grandchildren, Darby and Devin Gonzales of Hondo and Ben and Emerson Bishop of Allen; sister, Guadalupe (Oscar) Ramirez; brother, Benjamin (Elisa) Schwartz and sister-in-law, Victoria Schwartz, all of Laredo. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 11, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hondo.
