Obituary

Elleen Pearl Gooding, age 94, of Hondo passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. Born at her family's farm home just north of Hondo, on Sunday, Sept. 4, 1921, she was the daughter of Robert Louis and Nellie Louise Brucks Mumme. She was baptized by Rev. Gus Muennink at his home. Beginning at the age of eight, she attended the Fly country school on Tarpley Road, walking over the Hondo Creek and across plowed ground for about a mile. In her sixth year, she rode a bicycle four miles to the Hondo grammar school. Due to the Great Depression, her education ended. She learned to cook, tended a large garden, sewed clothes and became skilled at all homemaking chores. She enjoyed working with animals, milked cows and raised baby chicks. As a farm woman, she also built hay stacks, as there were no hay balers in those years. Elleen and Glenn B. Gooding were married on May 18, 1940, and began their family. She was a long time member of New Fountain Methodist Church and a current member of First United Methodist Church in Hondo, United Methodist Women and Hermann Sons Victory Lodge No. 161. She served as memorial records chairman at the New Fountain church for 20 years; was a room mother every year for her children's classes; and served as high school PTA president for two years. She proudly participated in Republican activities and was a strong voice in preserving the Medina County Courthouse wings. Elleen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sons, George Irvin Gooding and James Earl "Butch" Gooding; grandson, Jacob Ryan "J.R." Gooding; brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Ella Mumme; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Alvin Wiemers. Survivors include her grandchildren, Angie (Rodney) Dolgener, John Gooding and Robert Earl Gooding; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Skyler Dolgener, Robert Gooding Jr. and Desiree Gooding Harman; great-great grandson, William Harman; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, Jan. 29, 5 to 7 p.m., at Guinn-Horger Chapel. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m., at First United Methodist Church in Hondo, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. Pastor Lonnie Phillips and Vitas Hospice Chaplain Jorge Cuellar officiating. Casket bearers are Tim Wiemers, Mark Wiemers, Billy Mumme, Jimmy Mumme, Bobby Mumme and Rodney Dolgener. Honorary bearer is Howard Saathoff. Mark Wiemers will sing some of her favorite hymns. The family suggests memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Hondo, the National Heart Association or the National MS Society.
