Emmett A. Beard of Hondo passed away December 21, 2009. He was born on January 30, 1919, to Cecil and Mandy (Roberts) Beard. He grew up in Snyder, OK, where he attended school and ran track. He came to Texas during World War II and was one of the first troops stationed at Hondo Air Field. It was there that he met Mimmi Doyle Schweers and they were married September 6, 1944, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hondo. Emmett and Mimmi Doyle were blessed with three sons, Rusty, David and Chuck. After the war, he took up barbering and was a longtime barber in Hondo. He worked at TAI during the 50s. In the late 6Os, he stopped barbering and went to work at Kelly Field, where he retired after 20 years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where he served on the church council as president. He was a member of the American Legion Hal Jones Post 128, Quihi Gun Club and the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. Emmett and Mimmi Doyle were Luther League sponsors during the 6Os and he was the troop leader of Boy Scout Troop 192. An avid Hondo Owl fan, he was a season ticket holder until 2009 and he made every game over a span of 55 years. He loved to play cards and other games. He especially liked to camp and travel the western states with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years; his brother, Fred; and sister, Jo. He is survived by his sons, Rusty Beard, David Beard and wife, Janice, and Chuck Beard and wife, Diana; eight grandchildren: three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p .m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at Guinn-Horger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
