Obituary

Enrique "Henry" Lugo Dominguez, age 78, passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2011. Henry was born on December 23, 1932 in Hondo, Texas to Abel Dominguez and Juana Lugo Dominguez. Henry was the fifth of six children born to Abel and Juana. Henry's siblings included his sister, Otila, and his brothers Rodolfo, Jesus, Armando and Arturo. Henry's childhood years quickly and unexpectedly ended when he was only 10 years old, as in 1943, his father suddenly died and his mother, sister and brothers had to find a way to survive. Despite this tragedy, Henry's family found a way to survive and flourish and the strong sense of family unity and responsibility which evolved from his father's untimely death created a deep and profound effect on Henry's life. Upon graduating from Hondo High School in 1951, Henry began a lifelong history of service to his country and his community by joining the U.S. Air Force. After four years of distinguished service, Henry, now a military veteran, came home and married his childhood sweetheart, Maria (Mary) Flores, on May 8, 1955. In time, Henry and Mary were blessed with two children, Evelia and Richard Henry. Continuing his duty to his country, Henry began working as a civil service employee with the U.S. Air Force at Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas receiving numerous production awards throughout the years. At the same time, Henry became involved in community efforts to improve living conditions and city services to various underserved areas of Hondo. Through these initial efforts, paved streets and street lights were eventually provided to all neighborhoods in Hondo. Later, these community efforts involved improving flood control in the northeast side of Hondo, an area then notorious for flooding. However, Henry's most sustained period of community service was his term of service on the Hondo School Board. Henry had always been grateful for the education he received while a student in the Hondo school system and truly believed that education was vitally important to a person's success in life. Henry was first elected to the Hondo School Board in 1972 and had the distinction of having been the first Hispanic to ever serve on this board. For a continuous period of eighteen years, Henry willingly dedicated long periods of time to help in improving educational opportunities for all students in the district. Henry's period of service on the Hondo School Board was marked by the improvement in the physical facilities of the district and the expansion of student services during this time. As a testament to the work Henry did while on the Hondo School Board, Henry never drew an opponent in any school board election. In 1990, Henry decided to retire in order to spend more time with his family. For the remainder of his life, Henry devoted his time to becoming the best husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend possible. Words alone cannot describe the love and affection Henry showered upon his family. Inseparable from the time Henry returned from overseas to marry her, Henry and Mary enjoyed being married to each other and simply being with each other. Together, Henry and Mary always provided love and affection to their two children, their four grandchildren, their great-granddaughter and their many nieces and nephews. They were always there whether it was for a kindergarten graduation or law school graduation; from T-ball to high school football; from proms to weddings never missing any milestones. They were always so enthusiastic and supportive of all of their family's endeavors. Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years and best friend, Mary, his daughter and son-in-law, Evelia and Rick Solis, his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Henry and Mary Lou Dominguez, his grandchildren, Brandon (Courtney) Dominguez, Monica N. Saenz, Javier A. Saenz II and Nicholas Henry Saenz and the crown jewel of his progeny, Abbie Renee Dominguez. Also surviving Henry are his brothers Armando Dominguez and Arturo (Alicia) Dominguez. Henry was preceded in death by his father, Abel Dominguez, his mother, Juana Lugo Dominguez, his sister, Otila Dominguez Reyes, and his brothers, Rodolfo Dominguez and Jesus L. Dominguez. In addition to his surviving relatives, Henry leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication and affection to his family, friends and community that will forever inspire all those who knew him.
