Obituary

Ermila "Millie" B. Gonzales of Hondo, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the age of 93. She lived her entire life in Hondo and, it being "God's Country," never saw much reason to live anywhere else.

Millie was born at home on September 2, 1932. She spoke proudly and often about growing up in Hondo and, even after nine decades, could vividly describe the sights and happenings of the town in its earlier days. Hondo was not only her home, but a place embedded within her identity and spirit. As a devoted and involved member of St. John's Catholic Church, it was also deeply associated with her faith and community.

Millie graduated from Hondo High School at the age of 18. Always a loyal Hondo Owl, she married her high school sweetheart, Abundio Gonzales, in the summer of 1956 and began a nearly 60-year partnership rooted in love and family. As a mother, she brought patience and devotion to raising her four children. Her joy grew with the arrival of her grandchildren, for whom she remembered birthdays, favorite meals, and the small details that made each child feel special. Eventually, her great-grandchildren became her greatest delight and whole heart.

As with her family, Millie devoted her professional life to doing the work that suited her best: caring for others. She began her career at the nursing home in Hondo, later working for the Medina County Association for Exceptional Children (MCAEC), alongside Crickett Amberson. She developed a profound love and respect for children with disabilities. She continued her work at Kinder Haus Daycare and later at Meyer Elementary School, touching generations of local children through her compassion and warm presence. Long after her retirement, many former students and their families continued to remember her kindness and the care she showed them in their earliest years.

As a mother, sister, daughter, and friend, Millie showed up and cared deeply for her family, church, and community, and these qualities defined her life as much as any milestone.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Donaciano and Juanita Herrera; her beloved aunt and caregiver, Maria Adelita Herrera, who raised Millie and her siblings after the death of their mother, her son, Martin R. Gonzales; her sisters Eufemia Hernandez, Guadalupe Barrios, Lydia Palacios, and Mary Villarreal; and her brothers Efrain Barrios, Daniel Barrios, and Jose Barrios.

Millie is survived by her daughters, Anna Ramirez and the late Ricardo Ramirez; Martha Rodriguez and husband Rolando; and Alma G. Santos and husband Antonio, daughter in law, Marisa Gonzales (the late Martin R. Gonzales).  She leaves behind a large and loving family of grandchildren: Sonia L. Garza (Armando), Christopher E. Rodriguez (Nadia), Ricardo O. Ramirez, Gabriel A. Puente (Stephanie), Alexia Jimenez (Eden), Stephanie Gaucin (Christian), Martin Abundio Gonzales, Sean Gonzales, Manuel Gonzales, and Sarah Aguilera (Rodolfo Rodriguez), along with 14 cherished great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her half-siblings: Yolanda Martinez (Isidro), Ricardo Barrios (Ofelia), Juan Barrios (Margie), Teresa Benites (Carlos), and Tomas Barrios (Adelaida).

The family extends their sincere gratitude to Alamo Hospice of San Antonio for the patience, gentleness, and dignity shown to Millie in her later years, as well as for the support provided to her family.  The family is especially grateful to Dr. Robert Hays; Margaret "Marge" Summers, RN; Gloria Costa; and Karla Olivares, CNA, for their compassionate and dedicated care.
