Essie Mae Grant Johnson was born November 7, 1913, in Hondo, Texas. She was the oldest of 13 brothers and sisters. She was a faithful member of West End Baptist Church, Hondo, Texas. Essie united in marriage with Joseph Johnson, to which was born one daughter, Ima Jewel. Essie was preceded in death by her beloved father and mother, Millard and Nettie Grant; husband, Joseph Johnson; her daughter, Ima Jewel "Judy" Batteau; and her siblings, Lessie Thompson, Gladys Knowles, Betty Jean Wilson, Jonell Greenwood, Ive Dell Burnett, Ramona Henderson, Osborn Grant, Andrew A. Grant, Clifton Grant, Robert Grant, and an infant brother. Essie is survived by her brother, Cleveland "Babe" Grant (Lynette); grandchildren, Elton Batteau, Robert Batteau (Alicia), James Batteau, Leslie Batteau (Paula), Steven Batteau (Delores), Joseph Batteau, and Anita Cotton (Thermon); 12 great-grandchildren, Jamie Batteau, Gerald Batteau, Brian Batteau, Andy Batteau, Jacob Rodriguez, D'Wayne Batteau, Larissa Batteau, Leslie Batteau, Stephanie Batteau, Philip Batteau, and Debreaon Irvin. She also had a host of nieces and nephews and other loved ones. Essie was proud of her family and would always talk about them any time you visited with her.
