Eugene (Gene) Moos, 99, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Hondo on February 16, 2008. He was born on November 14, 1908, to William and Alma Moos, who owned and operated a dairy farm in San Antonio. He was the second youngest of their four children. In June of 1934, he married Myrtle Frerich of San Antonio. In 1940, Eugene and Myrtle bought property and moved to Hondo to the still-family-owned farm with the oldest of their three children. Over the years, three more children were born. Eugene raised sheep, cattle and grain until retiring in early 1971, and he and Myrtle moved to the home they built in Kollman Oaks in Hondo. Both Eugene and Myrtle were active members of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Eugene was a long time member of the Holy Name Society which included helping the pastors in various capacities; in addition, for attending Nocturnal Adoration unfailingly, he received special recognition from Archbishop Lucey for pertect attendance. He was also instrumental in helping to buy band uniforms for the first Hondo High School band when the first of his six children began high school. His life was one of serving his family, church, and community. He had a unique sense of humor and a kind heart that earned him the love and respect of his family, friends, and all with whom he came in contact. Eugene and Myrtle were married for 53 years. Myrtle died in August of 1986. He is survived by his six children: daughter Betty Jean and husband Herbert Ferrero of Round Rock; daughter Mary Lu and husband Fred Schoenfeld of Hondo; son Richard Moos and wife Karen of Hondo; Jack Moos and wife Paula of San Antonio; Rudy Moos and wife Mary Jo of Hondo; and daughter Virginia Ann and husband Lorenzo Garcia of McAllen. His grandchildren are Larry Ferrero and wife Suzanne; Jim Ferrero and wife Evelyn; and Joseph Ferrero; Stacey (Keller) Cross and husband Jason; Richard (Rick) Moos and wife Courtney; Krista (Moos) Binford and husband Clay; Diane(Moos) Sedlack and husband Michael; Adam Moos and wife Natasha; Houston E. (Rowdy) Moos and wife Gina; Scott Moos and wife Cheryl; Claire (Garcia) Guerra and husband Luis; Aaron Garcia; and Marc Garcia. His survivors also include 18 great-grandchildren. In addition, he is also survived by one dear sister~in-Iaw Kathlyn Schertz Moos, the wife of his youngest brother Arnold; four nephews and one niece. Services include a rosary at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, February 20, in the GuinnHorger Chapel, and the funeral mass at 10 A.M. on Thursday, February 21, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. The pallbearers were Jim Ferrero, Houston Moos, Adam Moos, Scott Moos, Rick Moos, Marc Moos, Larry Ferrero. The burial followed at the Hondo Cemetery, St. John's Section. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund or the cancer society of your choice.
