Evelyn Elizabeth Grell Winkler of Hondo went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 14, 2019. She was 83. Born in Hondo, March 11, 1936, she was the daughter of Walter Grell and Irene Annie Schulte Grell. Baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, she grew up in the Quihi-New Fountain area and attended the New Fountain school. She was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Shortly after graduating from Hondo High School, she and Charles were married June 5, 1955. Evelyn was known for her cooking, baking, canning, and candy making, and she liked to prepare for gatherings of family and friends. Everyone was welcome around the table and friends became adopted family. She enjoyed gardening and collected several species of hibiscus, poinsettias, roses and African violets. At one point she had collected violets with names of all 50 states. She loved to sew, do crafts and arrange flowers. Serving in many area organizations, she was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, worked in several areas of Museum Day celebrations and the Medina County Fair. She had worked at the airbase nursery, school cafeterias and at Edna's Flower Shop. A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she belonged to Women's Circle, served on Altar Guild and taught VBS. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Wilbur Karl Grell. Survivors include her husband of 63½ years, Charles A. Winkler; daughters, Karen Longstaff (Robert "Skipper") of Petal MS, Lori Bradley of Hondo, and Julie Barraza (Scott) of Sandia; grandchildren, Sarah Odum, Rebecca Odum, Christopher Odum, Charles Odum (Kelsey Brown), Laura Gardner (James), Cary Longstaff, Jack Bradley (Sacha Garvin), Lucas Barraza and Grace Barraza; and great-grandson, Finley Martin Odum. She will also be missed by her "adopted son", James Bradley. Visitation will be Saturday April 20, 9 to 10 a.m., prior to the funeral service at 10 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
