Ferd John Rock entered into eternal life on April 21, 2026. He was a native son of Hondo, Texas, born on June 24, 1955, an anniversary present to his parents, Ferd Joseph Rock, Jr, and Mary Anne Finger Rock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jerry Lynn Rock (Belita), and his brothers-in-law, Pat Williams, Mike Rowlett, and Joey Weynand.
Survivors include his sisters, Patty Rock Williams, Mary Ellen "Tootie" Rock Weynand, Teresa Ann Rowlett, and Barbie Rock Patterson and her husband Jay H. Patterson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He received his education in Hondo, attending St. John's School and Hondo High School. John participated in Future Farmers of America, played football, and graduated with Hondo High School Class of 1973. He became a lifelong Aggie and graduated from Texas A & M University in 1978. He was so proud to be considered an Aggie.
He picked up the guitar in his teens and music became a lifelong passion of his. He played and sang with the Holy Cross church choir as well as occasionally with some local bands until ill health and arthritis in his hands left him unable to pluck the strings and play.
Always an animal lover, John had quite a few dogs who also preceded him in death. Nevertheless, he still fed the wildlife in his back yard and kept many stray cats from starving. He loved riding motorcycles and rode with a group of friends who called themselves the DOFMC, the D'Hanis Old Farts Motorcycle Club. It was a sad day indeed when he had to sell his Harley because he no longer rode it much.
He was a Reserve Deputy with the Medina County Sheriff's Office in his younger days. He worked in the insurance industry and then had his own business driving an 18-wheeler truck. He was a loyal friend and always able to provide for himself. In the recent past, ill health plagued him with medications and doctor appointments, but he maintained his independence to the end. When he left this world, God was merciful and let it be on his own terms, from his own home. He was loved by his family and will be missed.
Visitation will begin at 1:00, Rosary at 1:30, and Funeral Mass at 2:00 on Tuesday, April 28, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, D'Hanis. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery No. 2.
