Obituary

Florence Ruth Zuberbueler Stiegler passed away peacefully on April 15, 2004 at her home in Hondo, Texas following a long illness. She was born in Dunlay, Texas, July 17, 1918 to John and Nora (Leibold) Zuberbueler, descendants of a pioneer Medina County ranching family. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Zuberbueler. She graduated from Hondo High School in 1936 and attended Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. On January 27, 1940 Florence married her high school sweetheart, Henry Stiegler. Together they spent the next 64 years, until her death, as cattle ranchers in Medina County, continuing her grandfather's and father's tradition. Florence was also a homemaker and was very active in her community. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Catholic Church in Hondo, Texas where she served as president and secretary of the Altar Scoiety and the Martha Club. She was historian of the Hondo Garden Club and a member of the Son's of Hermann for fifty-six years, serving on the finance committee for four terms. Florence enjoyed participating in celebrations given for the Medina County Association of Exceptional Children. She was a very accomplished artist, specializing in oil painting. Also, dancing and playing Rook with a great group of lifelong friends was something she and Henry loved doing during their life together. Florence is survived by her husband of 64 years, Henry Stiegler and their daughter, Karen Stiegler Winship and son-in-law, Dan Winship, of Corpus Christi, TX She is also survived by four grandchildren, David Winship and his wife, Darla, of Corpus Christi; Jennifer Belcher of Hondo; Debra Lichtenfeldt and her husband, Mike, of Galveston; and Sheri Hilliard and her husband, Grant, of Corpus Christi; six great-grandchildren, Whitnee Winship, Haleigh Belcher, Stephanie Gibson, Nathan Hilliard, Ashley Hilliard, and Brittany Hilliard, one great-great grandchild Noelle Gibson, sisters-in-law, Gerry Stiegler Schneider of Hondo, Doris Stiegler (Joe) Biry of San Antonio, and many nieces and nephews. Also, her wonderful caregivers Perty Esquivel, Mary DeLeon, Jesusa Reyes, Lisa Magnus, and Carmen Ortiz. Pallbearers are David Winship, Mike Lichtenfeldt, Grant Hilliard, Scott Belcher, James "Chick" Tschirhart, and Howard Saathoff. Guinn-Horger Funeral Home in Hondo. A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 18th at St. John's Catholic Church in Hondo. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. John's on Monday, April 19th at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Hondo.
