Freda Mae Johns, age 86, of Sullivan, IL, passed away June 11, 2006, at Illinois Masonic Home in Sullivan. Born Aug. 22, 1919, in Coleridge, NE, Freda was the daughter of Alva M. and Inez (Beckner) Covington. After graduating from Devine High School, she married Clyde "Lock" Locklar in 1937. He preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1952. She married Thurman H. Johns April 30, 1953, in Devine. Freda will be remembered for her home cooking as owner of the Lunch Basket Cafe in Devine for many years and Hondo Coffee Shop in Hondo, and as manager of the Medina County Nutrition Center. Freda was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; brother, Randall Covington; sister, Norma Jean Covington; and son-in-law, Roy H. Patteson. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Wood and husband Gordon of Sullivan, Phylis Muennink and husband Donald of Pecos, and Tanya Patteson of Dallas; brother, Arlyn M. "Happy" Covington of Lubbock; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A private family service was held at McMullin-Young Funeral Home in Sullivan. Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 15, 6 p.m., at First Baptist Church, Devine. The casket carriers were Eric Schautteet, Matthew Schautteet, Larry Covington, Donald L. Muennink, Jr., Justin Todd Muennink, Steve Patteson, Dennis Haass, Homer Boyd. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Devine. Memorials may be made to the Illinois Masonic Home, hospice, or donor's choice. She will be greatly missed as a mother and a grandmother for all the love and support she gave us, especially the pies.
