Gary Horace Schweers of Sugar Land passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 24, 2020. He was 80.

Born Jan. 21, 1940, in Hondo, he was the son of Horace Ervin and Lillian Marie Schroeder Schweers, who preceded him in death.

Gary cherished his family, friends and the outdoors. He was a proud graduate of Hondo High School (Class of '58, four-year football letterman, co-captain, All-District and member of the state semifinals team of '57) and Southwest Texas State University (Class of '63).

He worked at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as manager of large animal research for 32 years. Communing with nature at the family ranch outside of Hondo is where Gary was his happiest and closest to God.  Gary was a warm and loving man, who put his family above all else, and spent as much time as possible in a deer blind!

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janis K. Hopkins Schweers; son, Brett A. Schweers (Rachel) of Clarendon Hills IL; daughter, Shannon K. Vossos (Harlan) of Missouri City TX; grandchildren, Owen D. Schweers, Louis A. Schweers, and Justin M. Vossos; and sister, Beverly J. Palmer (Jim) of San Antonio.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at Guinn-Horger Chapel.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 29, at Guinn-Horger Chapel. Interment will be at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section.
