Gary Dale
Strelau
May 3, 1952 – May 31, 2022
Dr. Gary Dale Strelau of San Antonio passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at the age of 70.
Born May 3, 1952, in Houston, he was the son of Conrad Andrew and Carol Catherine Walker Strelau. His mother preceded him in death.
Gary enjoyed sports his entire life. While in high school at St. Mark's in Dallas, the Dallas Morning News named him Offensive Player of the Year for Private Schools in North Texas. In college he was a walk-on and played football and baseball for Tulane University. He went on to earn his Doctorate Degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio - Dental School. He opened his own practice in Albuquerque NM and developed it into cosmetic dentistry. Upon selling his practice, he moved back to San Antonio. In retirement he drove a school bus for Alamo Heights ISD and loved working with the students and other drivers.
Gary enjoyed traveling, golfing, playing cards, visiting family and playing with the grandkids. He taught all the grandkids "how to eat an Oreo cookie", dunking them in milk. They enjoyed playing Jenga, Rummikub and, of course, Old Maid, when they would dress him up as an "old maid," even if he didn't lose the game. Gary would join the grandkids in the pool every time they came over, thus he earned the nickname "Guppy". They thought that was funny since a guppy is a very small fish and he was over 6-ft. tall. He had a wonderful laugh and personality, and, of course, his original "Goober" smile. Guppy will be missed by everyone who had opportunity to know him.
He is survived by his soulmate of 12 years, Beverly Hood Lutz of San Antonio; son, Jonathan Strelau of Colorado; daughter, Lauren Strelau of Maui; father and stepmother, Conrad and Cynthia Strelau of Bedford; sisters, Sheri McManaman of Frisco, Teri (Jerry) Jones of Allen and Cathy Adkins of Frisco; and nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by Beverly's children, Tanya (Wayne) Moore of Utopia, Bryan (Jennifer) Lutz of Bullard, Krista (Blake) Butler of Seguin and Amy (Barrett) Phillips of D'Hanis, and nine grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held.
Memorials may be made to any children's charity of your choice.
