Gavino Cortez Reyes, age 86, of D'Hanis passed away Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016. Born Dec. 17, 1929, in Uvalde, he was the son of Sabino and San Juana Cortez Reyes. As a young boy, he was needed to help support his family and, in order to work as a migrant farmworker, he only earned a third grade education. He never allowed his limited education to define the man he became. He worked at D'Hanis Brick and Tile for 57 years. He spent his spare time self-learning how to fix lawnmowers, weed-eaters and other small engines. He played, coached and watched softball with his children and later his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing with his sons-in-law, working on his lawn, and barbecuing on Sunday afternoons. Gavino and Diamantina Lopez were married Dec. 13, 1948, in Hagerman, NM. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 54 years; daughter, Gloria R. Rodriguez; and all his siblings, Francisco "Frank" Reyes, Santos C. Reyes, Cruz Reyes, Eulogia "Loja" Pargas, Elsa Silva and Erminia Reyes. He is survived by his sons, Mario Reyes of D'Hanis and Leroy Reyes of Castroville; daughters, Beverly (Henry) Guerra and Kay Lee (Jesse) Coronado, all of D'Hanis; 10 grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
