Genevieve Justine
Hudson Aelvoet
January 22, 1936 – December 18, 2024
Genevieve Justine Hudson Aelvoet
Genevieve Justine Hudson Aelvoet, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, gained her wings on December 18, 2024, at the age of 88. She was born on January 22, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, to George Sidney and Alma Alvina Moths Hudson. She married her lifetime sweetheart, Julius Octave Aelvoet, on June 23, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas. They were married 43 years before Julius' passing in 1998. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
After the death of Mom's sister in the mid 1940s, Grandpa made a life change and moved the family to Belgium Lane to start a fish hatchery, raising mostly goldfish. Mom loved her trips to Indiana with her dad to deliver goldfish to the five-and-dimes up North. Daddy and his family lived directly across the street from the hatchery which is how mom and dad met. Mom worked very hard every day before and after school with her daddy cleaning tanks and feeding fish. Grandpa Aelvoet always told daddy that mom would make a good wife because she was such a hard worker. She graduated from St. Gerard's High School in 1954.
Mom was an amazing person. She loved cooking and trying out new recipes (most of which daddy DID NOT LIKE). She made all of her daughters' clothes (mostly "matchy-matchy") and she loved to decorate cakes. She made cakes for all occasions and has a sizable catalog with pictures of all the cakes she decorated. Mom taught herself how to crochet when she was younger. It became one of her signature hobbies. We all had ponchos when we were younger. Mom made us afghans for our graduations and weddings; doilies for our dresser drawers and coffee and end tables; and potholders to last a lifetime. She started making baby afghans when grandchildren came into the picture and then she kept up the tradition of making afghans for their graduations and weddings. She also donated all sorts of crocheted items, baked goods and craft items to the Hospital Gift Shop, St. John's Church Festival, and the Belgian American Club. Mom spent hours working in her yard. She would get up early in the morning, put on her long sleeve shirt and big sun hat and mow to her heart's content. She always told us how much she hated house cleaning because if you are a neat house keeper, you don't notice when it's clean but a freshly manicured yard is a sight to behold. Mom helped out with the 4-H Cooking and Sewing programs and Bluebirds. She was a lifetime member of a Bunco Club for over 50 years. Mom had so many talents – the list is endless.
Mom is survived by her seven children: Deborah (Steve) Kosub; George (Rhonda) Aelvoet; Cindy (George) Jones; Pauline (Wayne) Rodgers; Julie (Michael) Wauters; Susie (Dale) Zerr; and Tina (Joe) Carroll; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister, Jeanette Hudson.
Pallbearers are Zane Carroll, Cody Zerr, Raymond Wauters, Garrett Jones, Randall Rodgers and David Kosub.
Visitation is Sunday, December 22, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass is Monday, December 23, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., both at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo. Entombment will follow at the St. John's Mausoleum in the Hondo Cemetery, Hondo, Texas.
