Gerald Joseph "Jerry" Adamietz, 81, of Hondo, TX, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2024 in San Antonio, TX.
He was born March 10, 1943 in Boerne, TX to John and Jeanetta (Mazurek) Adamietz and raised in Bandera, TX. He graduated from Bandera High School in 1961, lettering in football and track. He began a 40 year career with the Texas Department of Transportation soon after graduation, advancing from survey crew to roadway and bridge design. Gerald was a member of the Air Force Reserve during the 1960s and served one year in Korea. He met his future wife, Anise Marie Balmos of LaCoste, TX, the night before he left for Korea. They wrote letters to one another during his tour, and after reuniting, became engaged on Christmas Eve 1969 and were married at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in LaCoste on May 23, 1970.
Gerald was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Hondo and served on the parish council and festival "Bean Committee," taught CCD classes and participated in the ACTS program. In 1982 he opened a local tree and lawn spraying service as a side job that was successful for several years. He was active in Hondo Boy Scout Troop 370 from 1986-95, first as an assistant Scoutmaster and later as Scoutmaster, and also coached a few seasons in the Hondo Youth Soccer League during the 1980s. Gerald was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Hondo Lions Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bird watching, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, going for drives in the country and rarely passed up an opportunity to spend time in nature.
Gerald is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Barbara Adamietz, Mary Yago and Deborah Pankratz.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Anise, of Hondo; sons, Scott of Pflugerville, TX and Patrick of Hondo; brothers, John Adamietz, Jr. (Eva) of Kerr County, TX and Michael Adamietz of Fort Worth, TX.
The family would like to give special thanks to Elly Gonzales for her compassionate care and assistance.
Rosary at 9:30 am will be followed by Memorial Mass at 10:00 am on Friday, June 21, 2024, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo. Enurnment, with military honors, will follow at Hondo Cemetery, St. John Mausoleum.
