Obituary

Gerald Lyndon Hay went to be with the Lord January 15, 2017 at the age of 88 while surrounded by family. He was born on Aug. 6, 1928 in Medina, Texas, to Rosa Mae (Porter) and Douglas G. Hay. Gerald was a man with a lighthearted sense of humor who left a lasting impression with those he met throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean conflict and was a lifelong Mason. He shared his love of nature and encouraged many to seek their education during his 36 years of teaching. He influenced many with his genuine positivity and willingness to help anyone who needed it. He spent a wonderful 57 years of love with his late wife, Betty deMontel Hay. After retiring from teaching, they traveled the world and worked toward their goal of visiting every state in the U.S. They purchased an RV and spent many summers making fond memories with their grandchildren. He was a steadfast husband and father, loved dearly by all. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Susie Hay; daughter, Kimberly Cude; his four grandchildren and their spouses, Charlie and Andrea Hay, Stephanie Cude, Travis and Katie Hay, and Lindsey Cude; two great-grandchildren, Henry and Sarah Hay; his sister, Melba Cook; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Guinn-Horger Chapel. The funeral service will be at First United Methodist Church, Hondo, 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, followed by interment at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. The family suggests memorials may be made to Friends of the Hondo Public Library.
