Gerhardt Henry Weynand was born Feb. 16, 1921, to Louis and Catharina "Katie" Guly Weynand. He entered rest Saturday, Mar. 29, 2003, in San Antonio. After graduating from D'Hanis High School, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1941 and was stationed in Pflugerville. He was among the busloads of boys who went to Austin to enlist. He was called up for military service in August 1942 and served in the U. S. Army in the South Pacific. He was discharged Dec. 1, 1945, and that year, the four Weynand brothers, who were all in the service, had a great Christmas together. He married Elva Maxine Martin Kempf in 1963 and resided in Yancey. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He retired from the Texas Department of Transportation maintenance department Mar. 31, 1986. He was a member of Hermann Sons Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3891. He enjoyed reading western books, camping, doing woodwork, having bar-b-ques and spending time with his family. Gerhardt was preceded in death by all his siblings, sisters, Hulda Dixon and Alma Fishinger; and brothers, Emil, Gus, Louis, Arnold and Richard Weynand. He is survived by his wife and stepchildren, Leo F. Kempf and wife Beverly of Blanco, Walter C. Kempf of San Antonio, Denese "Dee" Santos and husband Art of Yancey and Douglas Alvin Kempf and wife Sharon of La Porte; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Monday, March 31, 2003, 10 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hondo. Interment will be in Yancey Community Cemetery.
