Gilberto Moreno, age 86, of San Antonio passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2007. He was born Apil 14, 1921, in Uvalde, resided most of his life in D'Hanis, and recently in San Antonio. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army in WWII, he married Maria Teresa Fernandez. They were married 61 years. Gilberto was a farm worker, working farms and ranches in and around D'Hanis most of his life. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. By example, he instilled excellent family values and a strong work ethic in his children. He was a very religious man. He enjoyed following Southwest Texas State College football when his son, Hector, played starting defensive end on the now-famous 1971 team. He also enjoyed watching Texas Aggie football and following the Dallas Cowboys. Gilberto is survived by his sons, Gilbert Mario Moreno (distinguished attorney and Harvard Fellow who served in the Clinton Administration as Assistant Secretary of Education) of Washington, D.C., and Hector Reymundo Moreno of San Antonio; grandchildren, Amielle Moreno of Seattle, WA, and Christopher Moreno of Austin; and great-grandchildren, Christian and Cayli Moreno, both of Austin. He is also survived by his brother, Matilde Jimenez of Modesto, CA, and sisters, Polonia Garcia of Denver, CO, Oralia Farias of San Jose, CA, and Corina Her-nandez of Boerne. He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Moreno of San Angelo; mother, Cruz Rivera of Uvalde; grandson, Maximillio Moreno of Potomac, MD; sisters, Carolina Ortiz of Hereford, Leonor Avila and Julia Ortiz; and brothers, Encarnacion Ramir-ez and Evaristo Ortiz, all of San Angelo. Rosary was recited Thursday, Aug. 16, and Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, both at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Fr. Wallis J. Stiles officiated. Pallbearers were Christopher Moreno, Wayne Huser, Mark Rodriguez, Mario Moreno, Jake Meyer, and Mark Meyer. Interment was at San Francisco Cemetery, D'Hanis.
