Obituary

Gordon A. "Gordy" Mechler, age 81, died peacefully at his home near Hondo on Sunday, July 2, 2017. Gordon was born October 7, 1935, in Hondo; the son of Milton Leo "Mickey" and Wilhelmina Mary Biediger Mechler. Gordon graduated from Hondo High School and earned a B.A. degree from Southwest Texas State University. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine corps and served during the Korean War. He was Superintendent of Business for Northside ISD in San Antonio and retired after 28 years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing golf, and gambling. Gordon was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Growing up he served as an altar boy; in recent years, he served on the Pastoral Council, Budget Committee, Historical Association, as well as ushered. He was a member of Texas Association of School Business Officials, Texas Trap Shooters Association where he was treasurer for 12 years. He was also an active member of Texas Retired Teachers, Hermann Son Victory Lodge, and the American Legion, Post 128. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Judith "Judy" Mechler; his twin brother Morton William "Morty" Mechler; and his sister, Peggy Joeris. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cathy McCormick Mechler; his children Monte (Shawn) Mechler of Midlothian, TX, Jamie (Amy) Range of Dallas, TX, and Katy (Rene) Salazar of Temecula, CA; his grandchildren Sabrina and Zachary Mechler, Jack and Avery Range, Ashton and Gracie Salazar; sister-in-law Barbara (LJ) Haby and her children; mother-in-law, Jean McCormick; brothers -in-law Peter (Sandy) McCormick and Robert McCormick; and many other loving family members and good friends. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Gordon's caregiver, Lupe Rios as well as Fellowship Hospice. Rosary will be at 11 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, July 8, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Private interment will be at a later date at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. The family suggests memorials may be made to St. John's Historical Association, St. John's Building Fund, or any charity of your choice.
