Gustavo "Gus"
Tellez
August 15, 1962 – April 12, 2025
Gustavo "Gus" Tellez, age 62, of Hondo was called home to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
Born on Wednesday, August 15, 1962, in Hondo, he was the son of Anorberto Hernandez Tellez and Maria Martha Ramirez Tellez.
He is preceded in death by his father and his brother, Arnulfo Tellez.
He is survived by his wife, Angelica Maria Campos Tellez; daughters, Vanessa Zamarripa (Alexander), Stephanie DeLaCruz (Jose) and Teresa Tellez (Zachary DeLeon); son, Steven A. Tapia; grandchildren, Olivia, Brandon, Eliana, Chloe, and Amelia; brothers, Antonio Tellez (Sharon) and Norberto Tellez (Sylvia); in addition to his immediate family, he shared a deep fatherly love with his niece and nephew, Bobby Tellez (Veronica) and Tina Tellez (James Alvarez), who grew up with his children.
Gustavo Tellez was a man of many names—Gus, Gusto, Goose, Gizzard, T-Bone, Pops, Dad—but the one that touched his heart the most was PopPop, the name lovingly given to him by his grandchildren. It was more than just a nickname; it was a reflection of the deep bond he shared with them, a name that carried laughter, hugs, and the purest kind of love. Being their PopPop was his greatest joy and proudest title.
Gus was a man of many talents, guided by dedication, strength, and a deep sense of purpose. After graduating high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, where he quickly rose through the ranks, earning a place among the elite in the 82nd Airborne Division. His time in the military shaped much of who he was—disciplined, dependable, and brave. After completing his service, he continued to better himself through education, earning his Associate's Degree. He later brought his skills and determination to the City of Castroville, where he served faithfully as a lineman for 20 years. His work there was more than a job—it was another way he gave back to his community and provided for his family. He retired in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion.
Despite his many responsibilities, Gus always made time for the people and passions he loved most. A lifelong learner, he was an avid reader who could often be found with his nose buried in a history book. He also had a deep love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing—packing up the family for a trip to the river was one of his favorite ways to unwind. But perhaps nothing brought him more joy than working on and riding his motorcycle, a passion he proudly shared with his son, Steven, and later with his son-in-law, Jose. Above all, though, Gus cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren—they were the true light of his life.
In everything he did—whether it was working long hours, pursuing his passions, or sharing quiet moments with loved ones—his deepest motivation was always the same: to provide abundantly for his family, not just in material ways, but with love, security, and lasting memories. Every effort, every sacrifice, was rooted in his unwavering commitment to giving them the best life he could.
