Life-long Hondo resident, Herbert Alfred Moehring, passed away on Sunday, August 24 at the age of 85. Mr. Moehring was born in Hondo on June 27, 1917 and grew up on a local farm. After graduation from Hondo High, Herbert attended business school in San Antonio. Seeing a need, Herbert bought and sold vegetables in Hondo and turned this enterprise into G & M Food Store, which he ran for many years. He was also an active farmer with an award winning pecan grove and played in the Highway 90 Baseball League. Mr. Moehring was also very involved in the Hondo community serving on the Hondo school board for 12 years, active in both St. Paul's Lutheran, Hondo and Bethlehem Lutheran, Quihi, was a member of the Quihi Gun Club, and a volunteer fireman. But the real joy of Herbert's life was his family. He married Lillian Hartman and they had three daughters: Doris, Geneva, and Joyce - all graduating valedictorian of their senior class at Hondo High. The daughters each had two children and they spent many a joyous holiday and weekend in Hondo on the family farm - a tradition that continues to this day. Herbert Moehring had a huge heart and was always willing to help out someone in need. He was a true patriarch for his extended family, holding them together, providing a sense of place, and being a loving presence in everyone's life. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife Lillian, he is survived by his brother Wesley Moehring, and his daughters Doris Menke and her husband Jim and Joyce Herring and her husband Richard. He was preceded in death by his sister Lillian Grell and daughter Geneva Masters, wife of Russell Masters, who died suddenly last summer. Grandpa Moehring was also loved and cherished by his six grandchildren: David Menke, Kelly and Dallas Masters, Julie Herring, Jean Robinson, and Jennifer Robinson, mother of great-grandson Brandon.
